If She Can Do It, So Can I



As I was driving to a principal meeting this week, I drove by a woman wearing a middle school sweatshirt from a school where I had previous taught. The school is a great middle school, but it wasn't her neighborhood school. She was walking in the rain in a direction away from the school by herself with only her umbrella in hand. Even though the school was a mile to a mile and a half away, the timing, the outfit, the situation, made it obvious that she was returning home after walking her child to school to ensure they made it.

The neighborhood that I was driving through is a low socioeconomic area, where choices are limited because of a variety of reasons. Having also taught in this neighborhood, the one thing that I knew was that a great deal of parents that would do whatever it takes to make their children succeed.

This woman made me start to think and reflect on my own journey.

We often make different excuses for why we can't do things. No budget, no time, no resources, there is a process, are just a few that I hear almost daily. When the community that we serve has no option of making an excuse to survive, we as educators need to do better. NO MORE EXCUSES!

We must do whatever it takes to motivate, believe, challenge, push forward our students and our community. Look for solutions to our obstacles and do not become a roadblock in the success of your students and the community. Be a part of the solution.

Be The One who makes no excuses and does whatever it takes to make things happen for our kids.

Keep Them Moving

Summer is coming to end for many teachers, parents, and students. Summer is a time for everyone to get outside, exercise, and enjoy each other. When school starts, no of that should change. We need to keep kids moving all year long. Too often as the year gets going, classrooms get busy and activity is not a focus. Getting students up and moving decreases behavior in the classroom and increases attention. Activity needs to be present in every classroom and no excuses should be made. Here are 10 easy ways to incorporate activity into every classroom without losing "academic" time.  1.   Introduce vocabulary words to your class on a daily/ weekly basis. Use a bone or muscle each day instead of saying the word "go". This allows students to learn parts of their body, increase their vocabulary, and work on their spelling. Stop Making Excuses

I don't have enough time.  My custodial staff cannot get to it.  I am waiting for someone else to do it.  Every school has someone who has said one of those three phrases. Time, staff, and certain district level roles are sometimes limiting schools on how they can get things done. As a leader in any business or school, you need to do whatever it takes to get things done. As a principal, vice principal, or teacher, I have never been above doing whatever it takes. If I need to show up to school in my work clothes and bring my drill, then you better believe that is what I am doing.  A few years ago I was working at a school that needed another office built to house a counselor.
